Starting September 21, Yonkers Recycling Center to accept paint cans for recycling

Yonkers Becomes Largest Municipality in New York State to Partner with PaintCare Postconsumer Paint Stewardship Program.

YONKERS, NY – September 19, 2022 – Mayor Mike Spano today announced a partnership with PaintCare, which operates New York’s Postconsumer Paint Stewardship Program, to allow households and businesses to dispose of leftover paint for recycling with no additional cost. Starting September 21, residents can drop off wet paint at the Yonkers Recycling Center, the designated Postconsumer Paint Collection Site for paint drop-off. The City of Yonkers is now New York State’s largest municipality to participate in the program.

 

“Thanks to our partnership with PaintCare, Yonkers can continue to do its part in reducing our carbon footprint and be leaders in creating a cleaner, more sustainable New York,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Paint recycling saves us resources and taxpayers dollars, reduces landfill sizes and prevents harmful substances from entering our environment with no extra cost to our residents.” 

 

The Yonkers Recycling Center operates from Monday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. at 735 Saw Mill River Road.

 

Guidelines to participate include:

 

1. You must be a Yonkers resident; your license and car registration address must match
2. One visit per day, two per week
3. Limit drop-off is five gallons per visit
4. Paint cans must be in sealed, original containers with original manufacturer labels

  

Acceptable paint products include:

 

• House paint and primers (latex and oil-based)
• Deck coatings, floor paint (including elastomeric) and concrete sealers
• Clear finish (e.g., varnish, shellac)
• Interior and exterior architectural paint (Latex and Oil-based)
• Field and lawn paints
• Metal coatings, rust preventatives
• Waterproofing concrete/masonry/wood sealers and repellents (no tar or bitumen-based allowed)

 

The following materials are not accepted: 

 

• Leaking, unlabeled or empty containers
• Aerosol spray paints
• Drums or containers larger than 5 gallons
• Hazardous waste or chemicals such as paint thinner, solvents, motor oil, spackle, glue, caulk, adhesive, roofing tar, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, etc.
• Traffic and road marking paints
• Auto and marine paints
• Art and craft paints
• Deck cleaners
• Industrial Maintenance (IM) coating
• Paint additives, colorants, tints and resins
• Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) paints and finishes
• 2-component coatings
• Wood preservative (containing pesticides)
• Roof patch and repair
• Asphalt, tar, and bitumen-based products
