In 2014, Boyce “Scoop” Coleman drowned in the Hudson River in order to save a young boy who was drowning.
Scoop Coleman, the Yonkers native, was the first of many good Samaritans to jump into the water and managed to save the young child by initially reaching and passing him off to another person who swam him back to shore.
Sadly, after heroically saving the child’s life, Scoop Coleman did not return to land safely and drowned.
To commemorate this act of heroism, a park bench and plaque was dedicated to honor Boyce “Scoop” Coleman at JFK Marina on August 27th.
Along with the Yonkers Guardians, I was happy to facilitate this dedication to honor a man that sacrificed his life to save another’s in a true act of selflessness.
