Yonkers Insider: New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh: Honoring Yonkers Native and Former Professional Boxer Renaldo Snipes.

I was pleased to present famed World Heavyweight Champion Contender Renaldo Snipes with a Special New York State Assembly Citation for his innumerable contributions to the sport of Boxing and the State of New York.

Born in Houston,Texas and raised in Yonkers, New York, Renaldo trained in Yonkers for years to reach the highest echelons of the Boxing World. In 1977 and 1978, Renaldo won the Gold Gloves Amateur Championships to advance to the Professional Boxing World. Renaldo quickly rose through the ranks, eventually fighting Larry Holmes for the World Heavyweight Championship in 1981. While Renaldo knocked Holmes down first in the dramatic match-up, Holmes was able to regain his footing after a controversial long-count and retain the title of World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, a title he held until 1988 when he was beaten by Mike Tyson.

I thank event coordinator and my friend Mr. Carl Haggerty for his support in making this wonderful recognition possible. His effort to celebrate and highlight the contributions from worthy individuals are commendable!

Renaldo retired from the sport with an impressive record of 39 wins, 8 losses, and one single draw. He was also inducted to the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006 and the New York Boxing Hall of Fame in 2017. Today, he participates in a variety of philanthropic causes to advance the sport and support vulnerable communities. Congratulations Renaldo and Excelsior!
