NYLCV Hosts Rally with
New Yorkers for Parks and the Play Fair Coalition
Last week, the NY League of Conservation Voters, New Yorkers for Parks, and Play Fair Coalition held a rally at the steps of the City Hall to advocate for parks. Together we advocated for Mayor Adams to dedicate a full 1% to our parks in the upcoming City Budget. Parks are one of the City’s most valuable assets and we must be investing in them in order to fight climate change, protect public health, and bolster the safety and wellbeing of our communities.
Nine days after the joint press rallybetween the NY League of Conservation Voters, Riders Alliance, and Transportation Alternatives, the City Council, Senate and Assembly have passed a bill to expand the operating time on city speed cameras to include nights and weekends for three years. At the rally more than thirty people stood up for the principle that New York City should be able to control how it deploys traffic cameras on its streets. Many attendees held signs and pictures of loved ones lost to traffic violence and shared heartbreaking stories of loss and grief caused by reckless driving.
New York this month is starting a paint recycling program where residents can recycle paint at designated centers. The New York State Postconsumer Paint Collection Program was approved more than two years ago, but began on May 1, allowing both residential and commercial users to recycle unused paint, rather than sending it to landfills or incinerators. The program is operated by PaintCare, a nonprofit group established by the paint industry for recycling. The program accepts leftover latex and oil-based paints and similar products at drop-off sites throughout the state. PaintCare is setting up a network of over 300 drop-off sites across the state made up of paint retailers, local government facilities and re-use stores.
