I remain profoundly saddened by the horrific and senseless mass shooting at the Tops Market on Buffalo's East Side several days ago. The perpetrator of this act, an avowed white supremacist, traveled halfway across our State with a modified assault weapon determined to commit this uniquely heinous deed against one of Buffalo's most vibrant communities. Among the victims of this attack was the son of a member of Senator Tim Kennedy’s staff, a cashier at the Tops store. My deepest sympathies are with all victims and their loved ones. I have reached out to our Majority Leader, Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes, NYS Assemblywoman, whose district encompasses the supermarket where this heinous act took place, and offered her support from our City in this extraordinary time. Much like Yonkers, Buffalo is a tight-knit community that prides itself on being the City of Good Neighbors. I ask that all Yonkers residents keep the City of Buffalo in their thoughts amid this extraordinarily challenging time.
Today, President Biden arrived in Buffalo to console the families and condemn the vitriolic hatred which inspired this disgusting attack. This moment calls on all leaders, irrespective of their political affiliation, to stand together and unequivocally denounce racist white supremacist conspiracy theories like the ones cited by the gunman in his manifesto as to why he specifically targeted a predominantly Black community. I'm deeply concerned by the proliferation of this hateful rhetoric in our political discourse and media, which has become increasingly normalized by forces that aim to divide us for political gain. We must all look inward and see what we can do to heal these divisions and uplift all our communities. I look forward to supporting legislative action in the State Legislature on how we can both uplift Buffalo and prevent a tragic act like this from taking place in our State again. Hate cannot and will not win.
New York State Assemblyman Nader Sayegh 90th District.
