What’s Brewin’ Offshore Happy Hour Event Recap
On Thursday, April 21st at The BrickHouse Brewery in Patchouge, NYLCVEF held a happy hour as a part of our What’s Brewin’ Offshore Happy Hour series.
Our What’s Brewin’ Offshore program is a series of happy hours held at local breweries across New York aimed at helping New Yorkers understand the planned and proposed offshore wind projects, the jobs associated with these projects, and how to get involved. In 2021 we held happy hours in Port Jefferson and Long Beach on Long Island. NYLCVEF partners with Climate Jobs NY on this program with help from Citizens Campaign for the Environment, the Long Island Association, and the Wind Works Long Island Coalition.
NYC Considers Steps Towards Reducing Emissions with Local Law 97
In 2019, the City of New York passed Local Law 97 (LL97) as a part of the Climate Mobilization Act to reduce carbon emissions from buildings. This groundbreaking law puts caps on the carbon output of most buildings larger than 25,000 square feet, which make up around 50,000 of the residential and commercial properties across the city.
These upgrades would transform the New York City carbon landscape, as buildings and energy were responsible for two thirds of NYC’s annual emissions in 2019, emitting 37.3 million metric tons of CO2e, in comparison to the 17.8 million metric tons from the transportation and waste sectors combined.
Zoning For Solar -- Policy Barriers to Achieving Green Goals That Can Be Fixed
Since championing the first solar panel in history, New York City has fallen short on a list of solar leaders, ranking 36th in the nation for solar panel installation on a per-capita basis. Our current zoning laws severely hinder solar capacity for buildings. To reach the city's urgent climate goals, New York City should revise the Zoning Resolution to allow solar panels to cover 100% roof area coverage on solar trellises up to 20-feet above rooftop height on multi-family buildings citywide.
Can you sum up all your environmental positions into two-minute sound bites? That’s what the four Democratic candidates seeking to replace U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice were asked to do last week, taking the stage at Hofstra University’s Breslin Hall to talk about the planet just in time for Earth Day.
Bill Would Establish Drop-Off Sites for Composting and Recycling
The legislation, the Community Organics and Recycling Empowerment (CORE) Act, will increase equitable access to composting and recycling by requiring drop-off sites. President of the New York League of Conservation Voters, Julie Tighe, also noted that providing equitable recycling options to all City residents is critical for addressing the waste crisis and realizing zero waste goals.“ These bills are priorities for NYLCV and included as part of our 2021 Scorecard, and we're excited to support them as they are again considered in the Council,” said Tighe.
