America is in the midst of a gun violence epidemic. The four students killed and seven injured at Oxford High in Michigan two weeks ago was the 29th school shooting in the U.S. this year. The Gun Violence Archive notes, at present, there have been 671 mass shootings across the nation in 2021.
Thankfully, my colleagues in the Democratic Majority in the New York State Senate and I are serious about common-sense gun safety laws. In the past two years, we have worked tirelessly to enact legislation to safeguard our loved ones and friends across the state.
In New York, there are laws now to extend background checks for gun purchases; laws banning bump stocks and ghost guns; and a Red Flag law, also known as an extreme risk protection order, that bars people deemed to be dangerous to themselves and others from owning a gun.
I am not done yet when it comes to ensuring the public safety of all New Yorkers and protecting them from gun violence.
New York State Senator Pete Harckham 40th District.
