Three weeks ago today, voters went to the polls. The complete vote numbers are now in, including absentee ballots, bringing to a close the 2021 Campaign to Re-Elect Ruth Walter. The uncertified numbers in District 15 are 5010-Walter to 5690-Nolan (47%-53%).
The story in my race was low turnout--an overall decline of nearly 20% compared with results during the last county executive race in 2017. This year, many Democratic voters stayed home.
My opponent had a number of helpers, including a Robo call from the former President to drive Republican turnout across Westchester and an appearance by one of the most radical elements of his party, Rep. Lee Zeldin, whose vote against the Jan 6th commission will give him lots of trouble in his quest to be NY Governor.
In my corner were some incredible public servants, the most influential names in federal, state and local politics. Team Ruth included young people and seasoned campaigners, advocates in labor, environment and community groups as well as hundreds of donors at levels from $5 to our max donation. Across Westchester, Democratic Party leaders from areas that did not have a tight race pitched in. We all knew this was the #1 targeted race in Westchester, and they stepped up! To my team, I am incredibly grateful as well as to my colleagues and mentors in County government.
To say I'm disappointed is probably the understatement of the year, but in the past few weeks, the #1 feeling I have is gratitude.
I've loved the opportunity to serve District 15 as Westchester County Legislator. I'm grateful for all of you on this list who supported me with donations, phone banks, postcards, lawn signs and in-person canvasses. Since Election Night, I've had tremendous outpouring of thanks and congratulations on being the best County Legislator District 15 has had in many years. Truly, it has been an honor to be an active, engaged legislator and restore faith in local government for so many.
Standout achievements for me were the ability to disseminate accurate and timely information during COVID, to help individuals find help for their particular problems, and to send direct financial help to great organizations in our district. I'm also so proud to see the capital budget items I advocated for—noise cameras, senior fitness parks and fast-fill water fountains—bonded this year.
Partnering with Assemblywoman Amy Paulin for the Red Flag notification bill, prompted by the tragic suicide of local wife and mom of three, Treva Thoms, was a policy I am thankful to see signed into law.
My future plans are not set, but I can assure you that I will find a way to continue public service.
I remain so grateful,
Ruth Walter
