Here’s what we’re reading this week:

NYLCV Releases 2021 State Environmental Scorecard

This year’s scorecard examined 15 bills in the Assembly and 16 bills in the Senate. Both houses passed longstanding priorities for NYLCV, including updating the Safe Schools Drinking Water Act and the Family and Firefighter Protection Act. Both houses also passed bills focused on clean energy and transportation, including the Advance Clean Car and Truck Rule, legislation to make EV charging rates more affordable, and expanding the beneficiaries of community-distributed solar.

NYLCV-Organized Community Art Activation called for Climate Action After Ida Devastates NYC

Days after Hurricane Ida ripped through New York, NYLCV teamed up with a local artist to participate in a community art activation connecting New York’s urgent need to address local climate threats with the stories of the people and communities who are already impacted by the climate crisis.

NYLCV President Julie Tighe applauded Governor Kathy Hochul and NYSERDA for kicking off climate week by advancing clean energy projects that will deliver solar, wind, and hydro power from upstate and Canada to New York City along routes that call for transmission cables along the bottom of the Hudson River. If approved, these actions will accelerate a shift to renewable energy that will help fight the climate crisis and provide much needed relief in areas that do not meet federal air quality standards and communities overburdened by polluting power sources.(Journal News)

Governor Kathy Hochul announced the availability of $600 million to communities statewide to fund projects to upgrade infrastructure and make communities more resilient to flooding and other impacts of climate-driven severe storms and weather events. In addition, the Governor announced that she will propose a $1 billion increase to the "Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act," which will round out its total to $4 billion.  (Governor's Press Room)

Following New York City's deadliest storm since Sandy, Brooklyn Borough President and NYC Mayoral candidate Eric Adams is proposing a range of precautions to address extreme weather, including a multi-language public warning system and the appointment of a "climate resiliency czar" within the city's Planning Department. NYLCV President Julie Tighe was there for the announcement and commended Adams for highlighting the problems of climate change. (Gothamist)
