Dear Friend and Neighbor,
On Monday, September 20th the Governmental Operations Committee Chaired by Councilman Cabrera will be holding a hearing on my bill Intro 1867, which currently holds the support of 34 Council Members including Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Councilman Brad Lander, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, the NYS NAACP, The National Action Network (NAN), The New York Immigration Coalition, and well over (60) organizations have pledged their support for the Municipal Voting Rights Bill.
Intro 1867, The Municipal Voting Rights Bill seeks to expand municipal voting rights for green card holders and individuals with work authorization. When passed New York City would become the largest city in the Nation to enfranchise immigrants so that they may have the opportunity to elect their local city leaders. It is estimated that the Municipal Voting Rights Bill would empower almost 1 million immigrants currently living in New York City.
We have a real opportunity to enfranchise hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who pay their fair share in taxes and deserve to choose their local representatives. The Federal government has already established that the State and the City are the ones who decide who gets to participate in their local elections regardless of citizenship status.
Join us on Monday, September 20th, inside City Hall Park for a Press Conference/Rally supporting the Municipal Voting Rights Bill. We will be joined by City and State elected officials, Our City, Our Vote Coalition members, and advocates as we call on the City to support the Municipal Voting Rights Bill.
