New York City Insider: Immigrant Advocates & Allies Demand Immediate Passage of Bill Expanding Municipal Voting Rights in Advance of NYC Council Hearing.

Immigrant Advocates & Allies Demand Immediate Passage of Bill Expanding Municipal Voting Rights in Advance of NYC Council Hearing.

City Hall Park, NY-- Tomorrow, Monday, September 20, at 9:00AM, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez will be standing alongside The Our City, Our Vote Coalition(OCOV), New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), United Neighborhood Houses, allies, and immigrant New Yorkers as they hold a rally at City Hall Park to demand the immediate passage of New York City Council bill Intro 1867, Sponsored by Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, which would expand the right to vote in municipal elections to immigrant New Yorkers with legal permanent residence status or work authorization.

Intro 1867, currently holds the support of 34 Council Members including Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Councilman Brad Lander, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, City Comptroller Scott Stringer, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, the NYS NAACP, The National Action Network (NAN), and well over (60) organizations have pledged their support for the Municipal Voting Rights Bill.

In June, the legislation (Introduction 1867) obtained a large majority of co-sponsors, which secured a hearing on the bill (scheduled for Monday, September 20, 2021). The New York City Council hearing on the legislation will include testimony that underscores the immediate need for the expansion of municipal voting rights, as immigrant New Yorkers remain disconnected and isolated from the city’s political decisions. The overwhelming support for this legislation necessitates its expeditious passage, as nearly one million New York City residents remain ineligible to vote in local elections due to their citizenship status. Once passed, this will be the largest enfranchisement in a generation in New York City.

Who: Council Members Ydanis Rodriguez, Margaret Chin, Carlos Menchaca, Farah N. Louis, Oswald Feliz, Adrienne Adams, Carlina Rivera, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Murad Awawdeh, Executive Director, New York Immigration Coalition, Susan Stamler, Executive Director, United Neighborhood Houses, Adeel Ahmed, Community Organizer, The Black Institute, Derek Perkinson, NYC Field Director, National Action Network, Melissa John, Brooklyn Resident, School Teacher, Sarai Rodriguez, Queens Resident, Member of the Street Vendors Project.

Where: City Hall Park

When: Monday, September 20th; 9:00AM
