High school students form new group TACT Greenburgh . First meeting by zoom tomorrow evening at 6 PM Empowering youth development, education and mental health.
Greenburgh teens, Yale College freshman Kyle Shepherd and Edgemont High School Senior Daphne Luciano, have started student organization TACT Greenburgh. They are inviting high school students from all over the Town to join their organization, which is centered around empowering youth development, education, and mental health.
The Technology and Culture Teens of Greenburgh (“TACT Greenburgh”, for short) is a local organization, recently founded by Shepherd and Luciano, the unites high school students across the Town and its Villages in initiatives that empower youth development and education in the wake of impactful pandemic experiences. Initiatives organized by TACT will also incorporate adolescent and youth mental health, an increasingly important topic in today’s educational sphere.
This summer, TACT’s first initiative has focused on social-emotional learning (SEL), an educational methodology that helps learners of all ages to better comprehend their emotions, to feel those emotions, and to demonstrate empathy. At the Thomas H. Slater Center in White Plains, TACT has hosted SEL seminars with high school students in collaboration with Yogi Yocasta, founder of hip-hop-based nonprofit organization Teens Under Construction, Inc.. TACT’s SEL project with Teens Under Construction was a success for the group and the students involved. “It was a mutually rewarding experience - being listened to and understood by kids my age - helping them learn from each other the same way,” Kyle wrote. Throughout the upcoming academic year, TACT Greenburgh will work with community organizations and high school students around the Town to accomplish its mission of empowering youth development and education. TACT’s plans include raising funds for youth education and services charities, increasing awareness of youth mental health and educational needs, and fostering discussion among community members and stakeholders about these topics.
Currently, TACT Greenburgh is welcoming new members to its team of high school students! Team members will receive community hours and great organizational experience for their contributions. TACT meets once a month via video conference.
If you know a high school student that may be interested, they can use this form to sign-up. There will be an introductory meeting for new members on August 25th at 6pm via video conference.
If you have any questions about TACT, you can email Kyle Shepherd (tactgreenburgh@gmail.com).
