Today is Juneteenth, a day to celebrate the freedom of slaves. Although slavery was outlawed with the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in Texas were not made aware of this news until more than two and a half years later. Earlier this week, President Biden signed a bill declaring Juneteenth a federal holiday!
Yesterday, we celebrated Juneteenth in Yonkers by raising the Pan-African flag at City Hall, in front of Unity Fountain. The Yonkers African American Heritage Committee will be hosting many different events to celebrate during this weekend's Annual Juneteenth African Heritage Festival Weekend. I encourage everyone to partake in one of the many events being offered to the community.
Happy Juneteenth!
Best regards,
