June is Pride Month, a time when we celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ community. Back in June of 1969, police officers raided a gay bar called Stonewall, and thus began the Stonewall Uprising, a moment within in the LGBTQ+ Rights Movement that made it impossible to ignore the importance of gay rights and equality. Today, the fight has not yet ended, as the LGBTQ+ community still faces many hardships. It is up to everyone to become educated and join as allies, to help create a world that is safe and welcoming for us all.
In Yonkers, we had a LGBTQ+ flag ceremony today at City Hall, and tomorrow, June 12th, there will be a Pride Variety Show taking place at the Yonkers Waterfront Amphitheater from 6:00-7:30pm. Stay tuned for more events being planned throughout the month of June to celebrate Pride.
