County Legislator Alvarado comments: "On June 19th we celebrate' Juneteenth,' to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. It's a day set aside to recognize both the grim history of slavery and the bloody struggle to end it. We also commemorate the contributions made by the African American community to American society.
I congratulate the U.S. House of Representatives for passing legislation to make Juneteenth a national holiday. Establishing the holiday is long overdue and the right thing to do. We know racism continues to rear its ugly head all too often across the country. We must recognize the brutal and unjust horrors of our country's adoption of slavery, commit ourselves to be the nation of inclusion we like to say we are, recognize that Black Lives matter as much as all others, and work together to become a safe, equal and inclusive society. Establishing Juneteenth as a Holiday is a good step in this direction."
