Dear neighbor,
Happy Tuesday and Happy Teacher Appreciation week! As an educator, this week is very important to me and it’s an essential time to highlight the hard work and sacrifices that teachers make for students and their families. Throughout the past year, teachers have had challenges including online and hybrid learning to provide the best possible education for our kids. I could go on and on about how invaluable and impactful our teachers are, and I invite you to join me in the celebration this week!
I would also like to share the work I have been doing in Congress to support our teachers. I supported the Jumpstart Our Businesses By Supporting Students (JOBS) Act which creates jobs and funds training for teachers. I also led the joint effort to secure $30 million in funding for the School Leader Recruitment and Support Program (SLRSP) to strengthen school leadership as part of the fiscal year 2022 appropriations bill. I also cosponsored the Save Education Jobs Act to invest $261 million to save over 4 million education jobs, including 2.6 million teachers' jobs, across the country. Lastly, as Vice Chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, I will continue to introduce legislation that directly supports teachers by making crucial improvements to school infrastructure and improves teacher-to-student ratios.
There is power in education and power in being a teacher!
If you are a student or parent/guardian of a student and would like to share your favorite story about a teacher, here’s how you can join me in celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week. Even if you aren’t participating, please take some time at the end of the week to search #NY16TeachersWeek to see the wonderful work our teachers are putting in, and see the stories of how students have been impacted by their teachers. I hope for some, that inspires you to pursue a career in education as well!
