Today we pause from our work to recognize those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the ideals we all hold dear and for the country we love. While we don’t always achieve the ideals that so many have died for, today represents a moment to recommit to doing our best for our community in their honor. Memorial Day is about more than parades, and cookouts, and ballgames, and sales - it’s about taking a moment to realize that so many who went before us paid for our freedoms with their lives. Just a block from City Hall, one of Westchester County’s great war memorials bears silent tribute to those who fought in the Civil War - the lone soldier stands guard through the years and reminds us that freedom is hard won. Today, the Mount Vernon Forward team of Danielle Gleason, Cathlin Gleason, and Ed Poteat salutes the service and sacrifice of the women and men who wear the uniform and we join with all of our neighbors in honoring their example.
