Westchester Insider: Obit Desk: Community Activist/Expert on Race/Politics: Lawrence Otis Graham has passed away.

 


We send our Condolences to the Family of Community Activist Lawrence Otis Graham, who has Passed Away. God Bless to his Family and his Loved Ones, during this tough time. He was raised in Mount Vernon and later resided in White Plains and recently resided in Chappaqua. 

His Education: He had Graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, then went to Princeton University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts and from Harvard Law School with a juris doctor in 1988. 

Lawrence was a Corporate and Real Estate Attorney, A New York Times best selling author of 14 Non-Fiction books on the subjects of Politics, Education, Race and Class in America.

Lawrence appeared for Years as A Political Commentator on News 12 Westchester as the Democratic Party Analysis. He also appeared on other TV Shows, such as Charlie Rose, Today Show, The View, Hardball with Chris Matthews and Good Morning America and has also been profiled in USA Today and Time as well.

He was Formerly a Adjunct Professor at Fordham University and He taught African American Studies and American Government.

He was a Chairman of the Westchester County Police Board, also served with Red Cross of Westchester, Boy Scouts of America, Princeton Center for Leadership and Training, Jack & Jill Foundation and Council on Economic Priorities. He was a Trustee of SUNY Purchase College Foundation, The America Theatre Wing and The Horace Mann School in NYC.

He ran in 2000 for US Congress House of Representatives in the 19th Congressional District, where He Challenged then Incumbent, Republican Sue Kelly. He  came up short in that 2000 Campaign.

He was married to Corporate Executive Pamela Thomas-Graham. They lived in Manhattan and in Chappaqua, New York and had 3 Children.

He was an Author as well and his books centralized on African American Social Class: 

1 - The Senator and the Socialite: The True Story of America's First Black Dynasty (2006).

2 - Our Kind of People: Inside America's Black Upper Class (1999).

3 - Proversity: Getting Past Face Value (1997).

4 - Member of The Club: Reflections on Life in a Polarized World (1995).
