Today is the first day of Kwanzaa, an annual six day celebration celebrating African American people and culture.
Kwanzaa was created in the aftermath of an uprising in 1960s Los Angeles to give Black people an opportunity to celebrate ourselves and our history. And while not all Black Americans take this chance to celebrate, I wanted to wish folks that do a happy Kwanzaa.
May the next six days be spent fully celebrating and honoring ourselves, our history, what’s to come, and meditating on the seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
Peace and love,
Jamaal Bowman
