Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Last night Congress passed the second stimulus package aimed at helping millions of families and small businesses struggling to stay afloat. Although there is still much work to do, this stimulus package will help alleviate some of the financial difficulties New Yorkers are facing.
Among the many provisions, New Yorkers can expect a $600 dollar check as early as next week for those earning less than $75,000 a year. Families would receive $600 for every dependent child within the household, making a family of four eligible for $2400. Individuals signed for direct deposit could receive these funds before the end of the year. However, those receiving mailed-in payments might have to wait weeks before receiving their checks.
Congress has also approved a supplemental employment benefit for unemployed Americans of $300 a week for 11 weeks, in addition to New York’s unemployment benefits.
Additionally, the stimulus package has reopened the Paycheck Protection Program adding $284 billion in funding for small businesses. “The requirement is that 60 percent of the loan go to payroll expenses.” Many small businesses in Northern Manhattan saw little to no support from the federal government during the first round of PPP Loans. More information is to come as to how to apply for the new PPP Loans.
Many immigrant, working-class communities have received little to no financial assistance during the pandemic. Unfortunately, for our undocumented brothers and sisters, this new stimulus bill has once again failed to include them. I will continue to work hard to ensure that the City and the State are doing their part to help out immigrant communities and our small businesses during these unprecedented times.
