Yonkers Insider: New York League of Conservation Voters Desk.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s election! We know one of the most important ways to act on climate is to elect leaders who will prioritize action. While voting ended, counting is ongoing and many races down the ballot are still too close to call. We are closely monitoring the results and we’ll keep everyone updated as counts are finalized. You can also see results as they are posted by the NYS Board of Elections.

Here’s what we’re reading this week:

Building Back A Resilient City After Superstorm Sandy: The New York City Council Committee on Resiliency and Waterfronts held an oversight hearing to coincide with the eighth anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. NYLCV testified that while the steps taken by the City have been critical for affected communities, New York needs to establish its own resiliency plan for future emergencies rather than rely on federal emergency funding.

Climate Change Leads to Historic Hurricane Season: To add to the extraordinariness of 2020, this year also marks a historic and destructive Atlantic hurricane season. So far, 11 named storms have made landfall in the U.S. mainland, breaking the previous record of 9 storms set in 1916.

Green Tips: Winter Coats: It may not feel like it lately, but winter is right around the corner, which means frigid temperatures and probable snow storms. Winter coats are a must to keep warm during the frosty season but did you know that not all materials used to keep you warm are so eco-friendly? Check out our Green Tips on which winter coats are less harmful choices for our planet.

News Roundup:

President-elect Biden is expected to implement one of the most bold climate change policies of any U.S. President and reinstate the environmental standards that the Trump Administration rolled back. He is expected to ensure that the U.S. re-enters the Paris Climate Accord, expand protections of natural areas, and work to transition us off fossil fuels. (Washington Post)

New Paltz voters overwhelmingly voted to establish a Community Preservation Fund, which will protect and preserve water quality, farms, wildlife habitat, and natural areas. (Hudson Valley One)

A proposed solar farm in Lockport will move forward after an environmental impact statement showed that the project will not have any  adverse effects on the environment. This project will install 24,000 solar panels. (Lockport Journal)

There is an increased interest in outdoor recreation during the pandemic including a surge in license applications for fishing, hunting, and trapping. This increase is bringing needed revenue to state coffers. Hunters and anglers are also strong advocates for land and water conservation. (New York Post)

The Staten Island Coalition for Wetlands is suing to force the State to reevaluate its environmental assessment of a proposal to build a big-box store on protected wetlands. (New York Times)

Construction started on a dock in the Port of Oswego as part of the Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative. The project will help reduce flood risk along Lake Ontario shoreline communities. (WSYR-TV)

Sen. Chuck Schumer is urging the U.S. Navy to immediately develop a plan to connect homes near the former Grumman site in Calverton to public water. Schumer is also asking the Navy to “significantly expand” its investigation into toxic chemicals emanating from the facility, a former Naval Weapons Reserve Plant, where Northrop Grumman built and tested fighter planes for the Navy.
