YONKERS MAYOR MIKE SPANO RECOGNIZES ‘GOOD SAMARITAN’ AND YONKERS POLICE OFFICERS INVOLVED IN RECENT GETTY SQUARE ALTERCATION.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano will join Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller in recognizing and honoring ‘Good Samaritan’ Zacarias Green and several Yonkers Police Officers Wednesday, October 14 at 2PM at Yonkers City Hall (Unity Fountain) for their courageous efforts in deescalating a recent incident in Yonkers’ Getty Square that resulted in shots fired by a suspect.
On September 25, 2020, after law enforcement officers attempted to stop suspect Darren Smith’s car, the suspect fled on foot with a handgun. As officers, including members of the FBI, attempted to control Smith’s hand to prevent him from firing into a busy intersection filled with innocent bystanders, Good Samaritan Zacarias Green immediately assisted the officers in wrestling the suspect to the ground, preventing injuries to the officers or civilians. The suspect was apprehended and subsequently charged with one count of attempting to murder a federal officer.
Green and several Yonkers officers will be presented with proclamations for their swift and brave actions.
