Yonkers Insider: New York League of Conservation Voters: Environmental News for September 28th.

Here’s what we’re reading this week:

Green Tips: Sustainable Lodging & Travel for Fall: COVID-19 has changed the way that people plan to travel this season, with 54% of U.S. travelers more likely to take a road trip now than before the pandemic. If you’re looking to take a fall getaway, check out this week’s Green Tips.

NYC’s World Leading Speed Camera Network Expansion: Mayor de Blasio announced last month that the Department of Transportation (DOT) reached its speed camera expansion goal for the summer of 2020, giving NYC the largest speed camera network in the world. Speed cameras make streets safer and encourage New Yorkers to walk rather than drive greenhouse gas-emitting vehicles.

NYS Set to Create an Adirondack Road Salt Task Force: Earlier this year, the State Legislature passed a bill to create an Adirondack Road Salt Task Force. If Governor Cuomo signs the bill, the Task Force would be charged with reviewing road salt use and road salt contamination in the Adirondacks and issuing recommendations for reducing contamination.

News Roundup:

In an op-ed, our president Julie Tighe and Citizens Budget Commission’s Dave Friedfel urge the State to align its fiscal policies with its bold climate goals. They mention some of the policies that could be considered, including taxes and local aid, which our two groups identified in our recent report. (New York Daily News)

Congressmember Carolyn Maloney released a new House Committee on Oversight and Reform staff report on the health and economic benefits of climate action. The report showed that pollution reduction policies would save lives, save money, and create green jobs, in addition to improving the environment. (New York Daily News and Press Office of Congressmember Maloney)

In the Town of Yorktown in Westchester, property owners who want to install solar panel arrays and solar power storage devices will now have an easier time doing so because the town established regulations for installing these types of renewable energy systems. (Yonkers Tribune)

Peggy Shepard, NYLCVEF Board Member and Executive Director of WE ACT for Environmental Justice, spoke with the Threshold podcast about the impacts of climate change on low-income communities. (Threshold Podcast)

Environmental groups - including NYLCV - praised two central New York congressmen, U.S. Reps. Anthony Brindisi (D-22) and John Katko (R-24), for their support of legislation that will permanently boost federal funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund and address the maintenance backlog at national parks and public lands. (Auburn Citizen)

In an editorial, The Buffalo News supports large-scale renewable energy projects, and refutes incorrect claims against wind power, because the need to combat climate change is urgent. (The Buffalo News)

Due to COVID, there’s an 80% drop in public transportation use and an increase of car use in New York. Prioritizing pedestrians and bikers in street infrastructure would help decrease congestion and prevent over 31,000 metric tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere each year. (StreetsBlog NYC)

A bipartisan mix of Hudson Valley county executives called on Congress to provide funding for the Metro North commuter rail, which is facing drastic budget deficits due to COVID. Clean transportation options help reduce emissions from cars. (Spectrum News)
