Yonkers Insider: Statement from Yonkers City Council - Majority Leader - Corazon Pineda Issac, 2nd District.

Hello everyone,

With September right around the corner, parents are wondering whether or not schools will be reopening, and if so, how they will be reopening. Parents want to make sure their children's education continues while ensuring the health and well-being of their children is not compromised. The Yonkers Public Schools Reopening Plan outlines three possible scenarios and for each, support and training will be offered. The plan aligns with guidance from the New York State Education Department and the New York State Department of Health.

  • In-Person Instruction that takes place in a school or on school grounds with a teacher(s) and peers.
  • Hybrid Instruction whereby students are divided into 2 cohorts assigned by the District and each cohort will report to school on different days of the week.
  • Each cohort will have 2 consecutive days of In-Person Instruction with teachers and peers and 2 consecutive days of Online Remote Instruction outside of a school building with or without a teacher and peers.
  • On Wednesdays, all students will participate in Online Remote Instruction, except for Special Education ICT students and selected Multilingual learners who will receive a half-day of In- Person supplemental support. If a holiday falls on a Monday, Wednesdays will follow the Monday schedule.
  • Also on Wednesdays, additional cleaning will be done in all schools as well as professional development for staff.
  • Online Remote Instruction is fully delivered outside of a school building and requires use of a technology device (e.g., laptop, notebook, iPad) and Internet. The District will continue to offer Laptops/Tablets to families in need through our loaner program.

As of right now, schools are anticipated to open with either a Hybrid or Online Remote Instructional scenario. In addition, staff members will be trained and educated on COVID-19 and how to identify and ensure the health and well-being of the students and others. In order for this plan to work, it involves the participation of the entire community. For example, health screening begins at home. Parents are responsible for checking their child’s daily temperature and completing a health screening questionnaire. The plan will evolve as the process continues and feedback is received. It is imperative to familiarize yourself with the plan for a more streamlined transition.
