YONKERS, NY – August 6, 2020 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano held a press conference today to hold Con Edison accountable for their lack of responsiveness when restoring power in the City of Yonkers. The press conference took place where a fallen tree tore down live wires and caused a car fire on Linden Street between Poplar and Park Hill Avenue.
“The last two nights I have toured the city and spoken to a number of residents, and we all find ourselves asking the same question, ‘Where is Con Ed?’,” said Mayor Spano. “It is abundantly clear; Yonkers has once again been overlooked by the Con Ed in its restoration efforts. It is time we hold them accountable as over 9,000 Yonkers customers are without power. Time is overdue for Con Ed to step it up.”
As of 4 PM yesterday, 24-hours after the tropical storm, there were 10,146 customers without power. As of this morning, Con Edison says 9,449 Yonkers customers are still without power. A total of 6% percent has been restored.
Mayor Spano added, “After Hurricane Sandy, you would think utility companies would come to terms that this is a new climate we face. Simply put, Con Ed was not prepared for Tropical Storm Isaias, and Yonkers is left to feel the devastating effects it’s had on our communities. As a result, I am in complete support of Governor Cuomo’s call for an investigation by the Department of Public Service in to the utility companies and urge them to impose significant financial penalties on Con Ed as a result of their negligence.”

The City of Yonkers has been working around the clock to cut and remove trees. If there are power lines down on a tree, the city will be ready to cut and remove the tree once Con Edison certifies the wires are inactive.
