City of Yonkers Parks Department to Offer Various Classes to Seniors in July & August to Combat Social Isolation and Loneliness Caused by the Coronavirus Pandemic.
YONKERS, NY – July 6, 2020 – Mayor Mike Spano today announced the launch of the Yonkers Parks Department’s ‘Summer Senior Connect’ program which aims at providing activities to help seniors 60 and over reduce stress, increase their physical health and combat social isolation and loneliness caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The program is FREE of charge and open to Yonkers residents 60 and over.
“During the pandemic, our seniors suffered social isolation, financial challenges, grief and loss,” said Mayor Spano. “The Summer Senior Connect program will once again help our seniors gain positive self-awareness, independence and increase their quality of life. I look forward to seeing the many smiling faces in our Yonkers parks.”
Starting today, senior residents are welcomed to register for a 9AM or 10AM, 50-minute class at Coyne Park (Mclean Avenue), Untermyer Park (North Broadway) or Redmond Field (Cook Avenue). Depending on the park location, classes will begin on Tuesday, July 7th and end on Friday, August 28th.
Due to restrictions, classes are by reservation only and residents must reserve their spot by calling (914) 377-6143.
According to COVID-19 guidelines, residents should stay at home if they are sick, exhibiting or feeling any COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, coughing and/or trouble breathing. During each class, Yonkers residents must agree to the following rules:
· Practice social distancing at least 6 feet (about 2 arms’ length) from other residents and personnel
· Wear a mask or cloth face covering
