YONKERS MAYOR SPANO JOINS FAMILY THAT LOST TODDLER IN TRAGIC DROWNING TO ISSUE POOL SAFETY WARNING DURING NORTHEAST HEAT WAVE.
COVID-19 CAUSES BACKYARD POOL INSTALLATIONS TO SPIKE 400% IN NEW YORK & NATIONALLY AMIDST SOCIAL DISTANCING.
YONKERS, NY: City of Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano will join with Stew and Kim Leonard, who tragically lost their toddler in a backyard pool drowning, to announce a pool safety warning ahead of this week’s extreme heat expected to bring temperatures in Westchester to the high 90’s. According to national statistics, pool installations in New York and nationally are up nearly 400 percent as Americans seek socially distant ways to beat the heat while being COVID-19 safe. Officials will announce new pool installation statistics and offer tips to new pool owners who may be unaware of steps needed to keep children safe around pools and water. Drownings have been on the rise in the United States and locally.
Drowning and water related injuries spike between July 4 weekend and Labor Day, the hottest months of the year. Spikes of drownings have occurred across the country as “work from home” schedules have left children and adolescents without proper supervision near pools.
