Kingsborough Houses, African Mural 2nd Walk, Brooklyn-- On Sunday, July 26th, Strategy for Black Lives partners with The Black Code Revolution, Black Lives Matter Brooklyn, and New York Communities for Change in marching for NYCHA. With over half of a million residents, NYCHA housing represents an enormous contingent of our New York community. However, despite these folks often being among those in the greatest state of need, the city chooses to under-fund the system in each annual budget, allowing the buildings and units to fall into disrepair.
Whether our mayor is a billionaire who could afford to cover the total outstanding costs of NYCHA repairs from his own pocket and still be among the world's wealthiest men, or a progressive who campaigned on the message of "a tale of two cities," NYCHA residents have been left behind.
We march to remind our city that safe and dignified housing is a human right we refuse to see denied. An over-funded police department that criminalizes us, combined with an underfunded NYCHA system that neglects its residents, is a violation of the social contract between city and citizen. We will stand for it no longer.
