Yonkers Insider: NEWS: Congressman James Clyburn Endorses Eliot Engel.

Congressman James Clyburn Endorses Eliot Engel.

NEW YORK - Congressman James Clyburn, the third-ranking Democrat in the House of a Representatives and a civil rights legend, has endorsed Congressman Eliot Engel for reelection.

“Let me be blunt: we need leaders in Congress with proven records of standing up for civil and human rights,” said Congressman Clyburn, the House Democratic Whip. “Eliot Engel is not new to the fight for justice and equality--he's been in the fight his entire life and I have worked with him on these issues for almost three decades.”

The Clyburn endorsement comes as top Democrats in New York and around the country coalesce in backing Congressman Engel, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Democratic Chairman Hakeem Jeffries, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and the Congressional Black Caucus.

“During the South Carolina primary several months ago, I endorsed our party's presumptive nominee, Joe Biden for President, because of his long and distinguished record of standing with us,” said Congressman Clyburn. “The same goes for Eliot Engel.”

Clyburn pointed out that Engel has a 100% lifetime civil rights rating from the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and an "A" rating from the NAACP.

“Jim Clyburn has worked on the front lines of civil rights for his entire life,” said Congressman Engel. “It’s one of the great honors of my life to work with him in Democratic leadership. And let me be clear: there is much still to do. We must pursue greater justice for Black Americans after the murder of George Floyd. We simply must do better.”

Congressman Engel is an original cosponsor of the Justice in Policing Act, which would ban police departments from using chokeholds, develop a national standard for use of force, limit the transfer of military weapons to police departments, and define lynching as a federal hate crime, among other reforms.

Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY) is seeking re-election in the 16th District of New York, including the north Bronx and southern Westchester. The son of an ironworker and a homemaker, born in the Bronx and raised in public housing, Rep. Engel is a major progressive Democratic leader who chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee and has fought for the rights of women, organized labor, immigrants, our minority communities, and LGBTQ Americans for three decades.
