Yonkers Insider: County Legislator Lyndon Williams Endorses Mimi Rocah for Westchester DA.

***PRESS RELEASE***

County Legislator Lyndon Williams Endorses Mimi Rocah for Westchester DA.

Surge of support grows for former federal prosecutor challenging the incumbent.

WESTCHESTER, NY - Democrat Mimi Rocah, the former federal prosecutor running for Westchester District Attorney, has been endorsed by County Legislator Lyndon Williams (D-13), further solidifying Rocah’s support from elected leaders in the final weeks leading up to the June 23rd Primary.

“Mount Vernon wants a District Attorney who will respect, protect, and serve all residents in addressing all types of crimes including illegal dumping on our parks and ball fields, and without profiling innocent young people. Mimi’s record on publicly standing up to Trump, prosecuting corruption, and building partnerships to end gun violence is precisely the kind of change and leadership we need in the Westchester DA’s office,” said Williams, whose district is all of Mt. Vernon. “The Covid-19 pandemic has heightened the inequities in our criminal justice system and, as Democrats, we now have a chance to elect ethical, proactive and qualified leaders to office. Let’s do it."

“I am so grateful for the support and trust among Westchester leaders like County Legislator Lyndon Williams. My campaign’s message of ending gun violence and racial bias in law enforcement is resonating with leaders and voters, and it inspires me to win this race so that I can get to work on the urgent matters that have been long ignored in the DA’s office,” said Rocah.

Williams joins his colleagues in the County Legislature - Alfreda Williams, Damon Maher, and Catherine Borgia - in endorsing Rocah, and his announcement follows Hillary Rodham Clinton’s rousing message of support during a virtual campaign rally last week to urge Westchester voters to “make it happen” and help elect Rocah as DA.

Support for Rocah’s campaign has been growing in Mt. Vernon. City Council President Lisa Copeland, City Councilmembers Derrick Thompson and Delia Farquharson, and Mt. Vernon Public Library Trustee Cathlin Gleason, who is also second vice chair of the Mt. Vernon Democratic Committee, have backed Rocah over the incumbent.

Rocah also received last week the endorsement of 1199SEIU, the country’s largest healthcare union and largest union in New York state representing more than 450,000 healthcare workers.

A political newcomer, Rocah stunned the Democratic establishment in January when she came within two percentage points of getting the party nomination and has since shown an impressive growing coalition of party leadership backing her to unseat incumbent Tony Scarpino.

In addition to a volunteer base of more than 100 grassroots activists, community and civic leaders, her endorsements include ten Democratic committees, the Working Families Party, Eleanor’s Legacy, Vote Mama, the Hispanic Democrats of Westchester, the Hudson Valley Stonewall Democrats, New Rochelle City Councilwomen Martha Lopez-Hanratty and Yadira Ramos-Herbert, Yonkers Councilwomen Tasha Diaz and Shanae Williams, NY State Senator Alessandra Biaggi, feminist icon Gloria Steinem, national gun safety advocate Fred Guttenberg, exoneree and criminal justice advocate Jeffrey Deskovic, and former US Attorney Preet Bharara.

Rocah was Chief of the Westchester office for the Department of Justice for five years  of the 16½ years she was an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of NY. Recently, she was Pace University School of Law's Distinguished Fellow in Criminal Justice and a legal analyst for MSNBC and NBC News, where she emerged as an outspoken critic of the Trump Administration and the president’s efforts to undermine the rule of law.

Having a close family member who had been a victim of violent crimes, Rocah has developed victim-centered, trauma-informed policies as someone who knows both sides of the justice system. As part of her campaign platform, she has released detailed plans to get guns off our streets, aggressively address the human trafficking and opioid crises, increase transparency, create a real Conviction Integrity Unit, transform sex crimes prosecutions, investigate environmental crimes, and overhaul ethics reforms in the DA’s office. Last week, she released a workers’ rights policy that outlined plans for a Labor Crimes Bureau to address wage theft and workplace safety.

As a prosecutor, Rocah received numerous Department of Justice awards including the 2016 Women In Federal Law Enforcement Leadership Award. A resident of Scarsdale, she has served as a school safety chair at her children's elementary school, volunteered with Moms Demand Action on gun safety advocacy and worked with My Sister's Place on issues involving domestic violence, human trafficking and online child predators.
