YONKERS, NY – November 12, 2019 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, along with Commissioner Tom Meier and the Department of Public Works, today announced free curbside pickup of textile recyclables will be available to City residents on Saturday, November 23. Acceptable forms of textiles include clothing, footwear, sheets, towels, blankets, curtains and pillowcases.
“Yonkers continues to lead the way in its sustainability efforts,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Making recycling and trash disposal as easy as possible for our residents through home pickups is a great way to contribute to our ongoing efforts in making Yonkers a greener city.”
Beginning November 18, the Department of Public Works will accept appointments for curbside pick-ups of textiles on Saturday, November 23. Residents must call the Mayor’s Help Line at 914-377-(HELP) 4357 to make an appointment for pickup.
It is estimated that over 95% of all textiles can be recycled, however nearly 85% get disposed as garbage. New York State residents and businesses throw away nearly 1.4 billion pounds of usable and recyclable textiles. In conjunction with Westchester County recycling partners, the City of Yonkers will receive .15 cents for every pound of recyclable textiles collected.
“Our last textile pick-up day yielded 782lbs of materials,” added Mayor Spano. “Let this time be an opportunity for us to do some fall cleaning.”
Appointments must be made the week of November 18, until Thursday, November 21 by 12 noon. All textiles must be placed curbside by 8AM on Saturday, November 23.
Residents may also bring recyclable textiles to the Yonkers Recycling Center, located at 735 Saw Mill River Road, Monday – Saturday, between 8AM-4PM.
