Meet Captain Lauren - KALMAR NYCKEL arrives in Yonkers Fri 8/16.

Captain Lauren Morgens, Ship's Master, is bringing Kalmar Nyckel, the Tall Ship of Delaware, to Yonkers. A Cornell graduate with 15 years on this ship, she's a leading expert on sailing square-rigged vessels - who has just voyaged from Delaware to the tip of Cape Cod, across the Massachusetts Bay to Salem, through the Cape Cop Canal, Long Island Sound, Hell's Gate, up the Hudson River and back - and that's just one portion of the sailing season!

Meet Captain Lauren: Kalmar Nyckel Arrives in Yonkers
Hudson River Sails on the Queen of the Tall Ship fleet, August 16-18!

Who:   Meet Captain Lauren Morgens, the Ship’s Master of Kalmar Nyckel, a 141-foot, full scale ocean-going replica of the 1638 Swedish naval vessel that founded New Sweden in Delaware. Thanks to Kalmar Nyckel’s intensive annual sailing schedule, Captain Lauren has logged more sail-handling experience with this complex rig than any real 17th-century sailor.
  • Lauren joined the crew of the Kalmar Nyckel as chief mate in the fall of 2004, began sailing as relief captain in 2006, and as full-time captain in 2007.  After 15 years, she remains intrigued by the complexity and the mystery of the 17th-century rig, the enthusiasm of the volunteer crew, and the rewarding opportunity to train others in the art and science of sailing a historical ship.
  • With a Cornell University BA in Biological Anthropology, she studied oceanography and seamanship with SEA Semester. After acquiring more “sea time” she qualified for a merchant mariner’s license and worked on ships on both the East and West coasts of the US, including a voyage from San Diego around Cape Horn to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island and Tierra del Fuego.
What:   Kalmar Nyckel arrives in Yonkers for three days (August 16-18) of 2-hour Hudson River sails where you can discover a unique hands-on experience:  haul lines, set sails or simply enjoy a picnic and sail on the Tall Ship of Delaware. Learn about the remarkable story behind Kalmar Nyckel, a full scale replica of the elaborately carved and hand-painted merchant ship that brought Swedish settlers to North America in 1638 and founded the Delaware Valley’s first European settlement.  Launched in 1997, today’sKalmar Nyckel is owned and operated by the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, a non-profit, volunteer-based educational organization based in Wilmington, DE.
Where:  Yonkers Pier, 71 Water Grant St., Yonkers, NY 10701 (adjacent to X20 Xaviar’s on the Hudson)
