Historical Marker Commemorates Continental Army Camp on School 29 Grounds
Did you know that in 1776, the Continental Army made camp on the grounds of what is now Westchester Hills School 29? They rested and prepared a defense against an attack by British and Hessian forces in what became the Battle of White Plains on October 28th. The Americans, outnumbered 2 to 1, retreated to North Castle, under orders from General Washington. Nearly 243 years later, the Westchester County Historical Society recognized School 29 as an historic site, and joined Board of Education President Rev. Steve Lopez, Principal Steven Murphy, students, and friends to unveil this marker.
