News from Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

Recently, I was thrilled to be elected as the new chair of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), an organization dedicated to electing Democratic majorities in State Legislatures throughout the country.

The first thing I wanted to do was to reach out to all of you, my constituents and share the news.

Before last year’s elections, Republicans had dominated the New York State Senate for most of the last century.  That all changed this year, and I was proud to become the first woman, and African American woman, to lead a chamber in the Legislature’s history.

I knew then that winning back the statehouse started with uniting under one Democratic vision: Fighting for our common values, working toward progress, and most important of all – putting the people’s needs first. That is why we were able to deliver historic reforms that New Yorkers had been demanding for years including tougher gun control laws, action on climate change, affordable housing and tenant protections, voting and ethics reforms, and stronger protections for women’s rights.

While President Trump continues to speak and act against our values, I hope New Yorkers can take pride in knowing that their state government is standing up for them and their rights. I also hope that the rest of the nation can look to us as an example of what can get done under Democratic leadership. Together with my colleagues on the DLCC Board of Directors, I look forward to helping more states elect Democratic majorities. State Legislatures are the last line of defense for Americans against the current administration. With redistricting and the future of our democracy on the line, the stakes could not be higher.

However, my number one priority is serving you and improving the quality of life for residents of the 35^th Senate District, for Westchester County communities, and for all New Yorkers. Your feedback continues to guide my work in the Capitol, and I remain committed to working as a fierce advocate for you in the Senate.
