CITY OF YONKERS TO COMMEMORATE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF
D-DAY AND BATTLE OF NORMANDY
Mayor Mike Spano, along with the Yonkers Department of Veterans Affairs, will pay tribute to those who fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice of their lives during World War II’s Battle of Normandy, also known as D-Day, in a ceremony Thursday, June 6 at 11:30AM, at the Unity Fountain at Yonkers City Hall.
June 6th marks the 75th Anniversary of the Allied forces’ invasion of northern France by means of beach landings in Normandy. The Allied invasion of June 6, 1944 was one of the biggest and most significant military campaigns in history, helping end World War II.
Five Yonkers residents died in the line of duty on June 6, 1944.

YONKERS MAYOR SPANO ANNOUNCES FREE CURBSIDE PICKUP FOR TEXTILE RECYCLING DAY.
Residents Urged To Make Appointments for Pickups on Saturday, June 15; Yonkers Recycling Center Also Accepting Drop-Offs.
YONKERS, NY – June 4, 2019 – Mayor Mike Spano, along with Department of Public Works Commissioner Tom Meier, announced free and curbside pickup of textile recyclables will be available to City residents on Saturday, June 15. Acceptable forms of textiles include clothing, footwear, sheets, towels, blankets, curtains and pillowcases.
“Yonkers continues to lead the way in sustainability efforts,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Making recycling and trash disposal as easy as possible for our residents through home pickups is a great way to contribute to our ongoing efforts in making Yonkers a greener city.”
Beginning June 4th, the Department of Public Works will accept appointments for curbside pick-ups of textiles on Saturday, June 15. Residents must call the Mayor’s Help Line at 914-377-(HELP) 4357 to make an appointment for pickup. In conjunction with Westchester County recycling partners, the City of Yonkers will receive .15 cents for every pound of recyclable textiles collected.
It is estimated that over 95% of all textiles can be recycled, however nearly 85% get disposed as garbage. New York State residents and businesses throw away nearly 1.4 billion pounds of usable and recyclable textiles.
“This truly is a homerun for everyone,” added Mayor Spano. “Residents have a reason to do some spring cleaning, while benefitting the City both financially and environmentally.”
Appointments must be made by 12 noon on Friday, June 14 and all textiles must be placed curbside by 8AM on Saturday, June 15. Residents may also bring recyclable textiles to the Yonkers Recycling Center, located at 735 Saw Mill River Road, Monday – Saturday, between 8AM-4PM.
