Hello Friends,
This week kicked off our budget hearing process. The municipal departments that we met with so far were Human Resources & Civil Service, Constituent Services, the Office for the Aging, Yonkers Human Rights Commission, Yonkers Public Library, and the Parks, Recreation & Conservation department. If you were unable to attend or watch the hearings, you can go to the Yonkers City Council Facebook page and view them there. If you have any questions or comments please contact us and give your input.
Superintendent Edwin Quezada also presented his budget for the Yonkers Public Schools. The Council did not have an opportunity to ask questions or make comments but we have rescheduled a date for the Superintendent to come back to City Hall so we can have a healthy discussion about his budget. This will take place on Tuesday, May 14th at 3PM in the Council Chambers.
Here is a snapshot of his presentation:
2019-2020 Proposed Expenditures - $645.26 million
2019-2020 Expected Revenue - $627.65 million
2019-2020 Budget Deficit - $17.61 million
Facts about the budget deficit – Earlier this year, the original budget gap was $59 million. We received $21.6 million in state aid, will use $7.8 million from the fund balance, and the City to contribute $12 million leaving a deficit of $17.6 million. The superintendent proposes to close this deficit by making programmatic reductions of $3.8 million, staff reductions of $9.2 million and ask the City to bond $4.6 million.
If you have questions you would like answered specifically about the Board of Education’s budget, please contact my office. Again, you can see the Superintendents presentation on our Council Facebook page if you missed it.
Sincerely,
Shanae V. Williams
