FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: YONKERS FIRE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES ANNUAL FIRE HYDRANT INSPECTION PROGRAM STARTING MONDAY, MAY 20TH.
YONKERS, NY – May 20, 2019– The City of Yonkers Fire Department today announced the commencement of its annual fire hydrant inspections, set to begin today throughout the City. Yonkers firefighters are expected to conduct the inspections in a span of six to eight weeks. The work will take place between 9:00am and 12:00pm Monday through Friday.
The program is designed to test the City’s 4,280 fire hydrants to ensure they are working properly, have proper pressure and can function effectively in the event of a fire.
While the inspections take place, residents can expect to see fire trucks and crews of firefighters identifying hydrants on their streets, and opening the hydrants and flowing water during the testing procedure. While the inspections occur, residents may experience fluctuations in water pressure and discolored water, due to a disruption of the water system from opening and closing the hydrants.
To prevent laundry staining, it is recommended that residents avoid doing laundry during the hours of inspection; once cold water runs clear it is safe to run laundry. In the event that laundry is ruined, residents are encouraged to contact Yonkers Water Treatment Plant at (914) 377-6765 to obtain ‘Red-B-Gone’ stain remover at no cost to them.
Residents are encouraged to check the City website www.yonkersny.gov for the most updated information. Residents can also contact the 24-hour Mayor’s Helpline at 914-377-HELP (4357) for additional questions or concerns.
