On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the Yonkers City Council held a Stated City Council meeting. All items on the agenda appear below, as well as the decisions taken by the City Council in regard to these items. 

Stated City Council Meeting 1.Resolution - advice and consent to the appointment of Mark V. Territo to the position of Deputy Commissioner of Planning and Development. (Adopted 6-0) 2.A Resolution authorizing acceptance of a bequest from Joseph P. McLaughlin  (Adopted 6-0) 3. Resolution of the City of Yonkers expressing the City Council's continued opposition to the MTA's Central Business District Tolling Program, also known as congestion pricing, and praising Governor Hochul's decision to pause the program in response to public outcry including the City Council's unanimously adopted resolution 4-2024 that previously opposed the same. (Adopted 6-0) 4. Resolution of the City Council of Yonkers calling for the New York State Department of Transportation to study, develop and implement appropriate safety measures on the northbound central park avenue (Route 100) access ramp to the northbound Sprain Brook Parkway near the intersection with Palmer Road. (Adopted 6-0) 5. Resolution authorizing the initiation of the review process for the discontinuance and removal of the easternmost portion of McMahon Avenue at its intersection with Central Park Avenue from the official map of the City of Yonkers. (Adopted 6-0) 6.Resolution of the City Council of Yonkers recognizing December 10, 2024 as Human Rights Day. (Adopted 6-0) 7. Yonkers Insider: *For Immediate Release* Gov. Hochul Vetoes Bill by Mayer and Paulin to Support Non-Profit Organizations.

 

***FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*** November 25, 2024  Gov. Hochul Vetoes Bill by Mayer and Paulin to  Support Non-Profit Organizations.

ALBANY, NY – Governor Hochul vetoed a bill on Friday by Senator Shelley Mayer and Assemblymember Amy Paulin that aims to address the unacceptably slow contract and procurement process faced by non-profit organizations that contract with New York State. S4877/A2740B would have required agencies that fail to submit renewal contracts to the Attorney General or execute them in a timely fashion to report to the State Comptroller on the status of those late contracts. The bill also would have required agencies with delayed contracts to report to the Comptroller on barriers to submitting and executing contracts in a timely manner, and their plans to address those issues.  New York State relies on not-for-profits for everything from early education childhood programs to safety net services including mental health assistance, homeless shelters and legal counseling. The state outsources to and relies on not-for-profits to provide these services, and without them many programs would not even exist. These agencies are performing work that the state is obligated to do by law. It would be more expensive if the state did the work. Unfortunately, the timeliness of the state’s contracting process and procurement is consistently slow, delaying payments and often undermining the financial stability of these organizations.  New York State Senator Shelley B. Mayer said, “I am deeply disappointed that Governor Hochul has vetoed a bill that would have helped non-profit organizations across the state deliver vital services to our communities. For years, I have heard from non-profits about the challenges created by delays in executing their contracts with the state. This legislation would have provided needed transparency for non-profits with delayed contracts, and pushed state agencies to address bottlenecks and other barriers to their ability to execute contracts in a timely manner. Although this is a setback, I will continue to fight, alongside my colleague Assemblymember Paulin, to support our non-profits and address persistent delays in state contracting.”  Assemblymember Amy Paulin said, “I am deeply disappointed with Governor Hochul’s veto of A.2740b/S.4977a, which would have helped to ensure timely payment to not-for-profits which contract with New York State. This legislation would ensure that the state does not continue to put our state’s not-for-profits in precarious and unfair financial situations. Likewise, it will improve the contracting process and ultimately the delivery of essential services to New Yorkers. For these reasons State Senator Mayer and I will be reintroducing this bill in the 2025 Legislative Session. Upon its passage in the Legislature, I urge Governor Hochul to swiftly sign it into law.”

YONKERS MAYOR SPANO TO DELIVER OVER 400 THANKSGIVING DINNERS TO NEEDY FAMILIES IN YONKERS.

 

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano will deliver over 400 Thanksgiving dinners to needy families in Yonkers Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at 12:00 PM at the Yonkers Police Athletic Leagues (PAL) located at 127 North Broadway.

 

The dinners are supplied by private donations from the Yonkers Police Athletic League (PAL), Yonkers Contracting, ShopRite, Valley Oil Co., Mark Stagg of Stagg Group and PCNY. Each donation will consist of turkey and all its fixings. The deserving families were pre-selected by local community-based organizations.

 

Since coming into office in 2012, Mayor Spano has organized the donations of Thanksgiving dinners to Yonkers families every November.

There is a feeling out there that Yonkers City Judge Verris Shako could be one of the Candidates Nominated to run for NYS Supreme Court Justice in the 2025 Election Cycle. We will keep our readers posted on this race and if Judge Shako will be one of the Candidates selected for Supreme.

We write this Editorial as we look towards the Election Season in 2025 for the 2025 Elections. We will continue to cover the Elections on our Yonkers Insider Election Desk 2025.

Some interesting races could be headed towards us in 2025.

Westchester County Executive: With County Executive Latimer becoming A Congressman in January. The Office for Westchester County Executive will be an Open Seat in 2025 with A Special Election Slated for Early in 2025 and then another one in Either Primary Season or More Likely for General Election in November. 

Westchester County Deputy County Executive Ken Jenkins has Already Announced his County Executive. We shall see who ends up Challenging him. 

There are rumors that Assemblyman Matt Slater and Christine Sculti who challenged County Exec Latimer in 2021 are seen as Potential Candidates for County Exec in 2025 Perhaps could be GOP Candidate for County Exec, We shall see.

Westchester County Clerk: Westchester County Clerk Tim Idoni is not seeking reelection for Westchester County Clerk. Thus we have another Westchester as an Open seat in 2025 Elections. 

Democrats: White Plains Mayor Tom Roach and NYS Assemblyman Nader Sayegh are interested in running for Westchester County Clerk. We will keep our readers updated on this race.

Westchester County Legislators: All 17 Seats are up for Election in 2025. Democrats hold a 15 to 1 Republican and 1 Conservative on the Westchester County Board of Legislators. We will keep our readers posted on the races on the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

Yonkers City Council President: Current Yonkers City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy is seeking a 2nd term as Yonkers City Council President in 2025.  

She could face opposition from Potential Candidates: Yonkers City Councilwoman Tasha Diaz, Community Activist Christine Peters and Community Watchdog Ron Matten as well. We will keep our readers posted on this race.

Yonkers City Council:

2nd District: Councilwoman Corazon Pineda Issac is up for Re-Election in 2025. Will She face opposition from A Mayor Spano Candidate in the 2025 Elections? Only time will tell. We will keep our readers posted on this race.

4th District: Yonkers City Council Majority Leader John Rubbo is up for Re-Election in 2025. What opponent will face him in the 2025 Elections? We will keep our readers posted on this race.

6th District: Yonkers City Councilman Anthony Merante is up for Re-Election in 2025. Will Tim Hodges Re-Enter the Political Ring in 2025 and Challenge Councilman Merante like he did 4 Years ago? Yonkers Insider Editorial: Former Westchester County Legislator Virginia Perez is sorely missed as an Elected Official. It's time for her to return back where She rightfully belongs!

We write this Editorial and We Express how so missed Former Westchester County Legislator Virginia Perez who was Elected in 2011 for the 17th County Legislative District Seat and Served till 2019 truly is missed by the people.

She gave so much to the 17th District when She was Representing the 17th District as a Westchester County Legislator and She always fought hard for Her Extended Family - Her Constituents.

She also Fought hard for Her Seniors, The Senior Citizens that She Represented in the 17th District. She followed the great example of advocating for Our Seniors by Following the Example of the Late Bernice Spreckman, Former Westchester County Legislator.

We hope Virginia returns back to Politics Sooner rather than later, In Our View, She is so needed in Elected Office in Our City and in Our County in our View. 

She made a great impact when She was an Elected Official, No one worked harder than Virginia Perez as an Elected Official. She stood up for the People and against the Political Establishment and that is why the Political Establishment hated her with A Passion. It's time to Return Virginia!

It's Time to Come Back Virginia: Your City and Your County needs you back in Elected Office!
