Yonkers Police Department Investigation Into Found Body
Transferred to the New York City Police Department.
Yonkers, NY- Just before 2:00 am on August 5, 2024, the Yonkers Police Department responded to the southern sidewalk of the Oak Street bridge, just inside of the jurisdictional border with the City of Mt. Vernon, on a report of a body found.
This call originated as a fire at that location. Upon extinguishing the flames, Westchester County Department of Public Safety Police Officers and the Mount Vernon Fire Department reported they had discovered a lifeless body.
Upon arrival, Yonkers Police Officers located a body that had been placed in a shopping cart on the sidewalk and apparently set on fire at that location.
Due to the location of where this body was found, the Yonkers Police Department initiated a death investigation as the primary investigative agency.
Detectives from the Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit conducted a thorough investigation at the scene- canvassing the area, processing evidence, and establishing a foundation in the preliminary stages of this investigation.
Later in the day, investigators officially deemed the investigation to be a homicide. Evidence was discovered which determined that while the body was set on fire in the confines of the City of Yonkers, it appeared this was merely a “dump site” and the more appropriate primary investigative agency for this homicide is the New York City Police Department.
As such, this investigation has been turned over to the New York City Police Department and the Bronx County District Attorney’s Office. Any further inquiries and requests for information should be directed to these agencies.
Responding Yonkers Police Officers determined that a body had been placed in a shopping cart and apparently set on fire at that location.
While it is unsure at this time where this incident occurred, because of the location this body was found, the Yonkers Police Department is the primary investigative agency. Detectives from our Major Case Squad and Crime Scene Unit were on scene all morning processing evidence in the preliminary stages of this investigation.
It has been prematurely reported by the media that this victim was “dismembered,” however, these details regarding the body cannot be determined at this time, due to the fire. Yonkers Police Detectives are working closely with the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office who will make that determination along with the exact cause of death and any additional injuries to the victim.
More info may be released as the investigation progresses.
