White Plains, N.Y. - William O. Wagstaff III, running for Westchester District Attorney, further cemented his status as the Democratic frontrunner with today’s endorsements from Assemblymember Chris Burdick, the Mayor of the City of Peekskill, Vivian C. McKenzie, and the Westchester County Board of Legislators Majority Leader Tyrae Woodson-Samuels (D), alongside a 100% pro-choice rating by Choice Matters.

 

“I am proud to endorse William Wagstaff to be the next DA of Westchester County. William’s life story allows him to understand the complexities surrounding many of the diverse communities here in Peekskill, and throughout Westchester County,” said Peekskill Mayor Vivian C. McKenzie. “We need a District Attorney that will be working in the community for crime prevention and working to fight bias, and William will be that person. He’s the person we need to be the chief law enforcement officer in Westchester County.”

 

Wagstaff, a respected attorney, proven civil rights advocate, and steadfast social justice champion, welcomed the endorsement from Mayor McKenzie, stating, “I’m honored to be endorsed by Mayor McKenzie, a trailblazing leader who shares an understanding of how to deliver equitable results for our diverse communities in Westchester County.”

 

McKenzie made history as the first Black woman elected as Mayor of Peekskill, and Wagstaff is running to become the first Black District Attorney for Westchester County.

Deeply appreciative of Assemblymember Burdick’s endorsement, Wagstaff noted it compliments his deep commitment to community and justice; currently serving as Special Prosecutor for Police Discipline in Mount Vernon, Chair of the African American Men of Westchester Mentoring Committee, and also being on the Board of Directors for the Legal Aid Society of Westchester.

 

Tyrae Woodson-Samuels, the Majority Leader of the Westchester County Board of Legislators, also praised Wagstaff, stating, “William O. Wagstaff, a respected attorney who also holds an MBA from Fordham, added that “the status quo fails to meet the needs of Westchester County” and touted his implementation of data-driven solutions to address gun violence, hate crimes, domestic violence, and property crimes to “deliver real results instead of rhetoric.”

 

Wagstaff also expressed admiration for a 100% pro-choice rating from Choice Matters, stating, “I stand firm in my commitment to upholding reproductive rights and protecting the freedom to choose. Together, we will ensure everyone’s right to reproductive freedom and justice is respected and protected with my unrelenting support as your next DA.”

 

Wagstaff, who also recently received endorsements from a broad coalition of Westchester County Councilmembers, said he is “deeply thankful and honored by the diverse cross-county support.”

 

Wagstaff, who has raised more than $100,000 so far for his 2024 campaign, is poised as the frontrunner of the three candidates vying for the Westchester County Democratic County Committee nomination, to be announced at the Party’s convention next Monday, February 12th.

 

“Westchester needs a District Attorney who will prioritize protecting our communities and standing up for victims, while at the same time recognizing that our system does not always lead to just outcomes. WHITE PLAINS NANNY SENTENCED TO JAIL FOR RECKLESS ASSAULT OF BABY IN HER CARE.

The 3-month-old suffered seizures and head trauma; defendant admitted to bouncing, shaking baby in an unsafe manner.

 

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced today that a White Plains woman was sentenced on Monday to six months of incarceration for the reckless assault of a 3-month-old baby that was in her care while employed as a nanny.  

 

DA Rocah said: “The defendant endangered the life of a defenseless baby and also traumatized a family who had entrusted her with the care of their child. This sentence ensures some measure of accountability for her reckless actions.” 

 

The defendant, Nija Woodbury, 23, pleaded guilty on July 27, 2023, to Reckless Assault of a Child, a felony. In addition to her term of incarceration, the defendant was sentenced to five years of probation.

  

At approximately 5 p.m. on Jan. 10, 2023, the defendant, who was employed as a nanny for a family in Mount Pleasant, aggressively shook and bounced the 3-month-old victim without supporting his head. After the defendant placed the victim back into his crib, the victim’s mother observed the baby in a strange position on the baby monitor. Upon realizing the baby was seizing, turning blue and unresponsive, the victim’s mother called 911. The defendant was present during this time and said nothing about what she had done earlier to the baby.  

 

The victim was transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he continued to seize and vomit. CT scans revealed bilateral subdural hematomas and bilateral retinal hemorrhages—indicators of a shaken baby. The victim was treated for abusive head trauma for a week in the pediatric intensive care unit. 

 

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office conducted forensic analysis of the defendant’s phone and retrieved deleted text messages from earlier in the day of the incident that indicated the defendant’s frustration when the baby would not stop crying. Once confronted with her deleted text messages, the defendant admitted to Mount Pleasant police that she had bounced and shaken the baby in a manner that she knew was unsafe.  

 

The Mount Pleasant Police Department arrested the defendant on Jan. 13, 2023. 

 

In a statement to the court, the victim’s mother stated: “Before this event, I never thought that someone was capable of doing this...I used to always believe that people are innately good and that I can trust my intuition–I now no longer feel that way. I have dealt with the overwhelming guilt about allowing Nija in my home and being responsible for introducing her to what I hold most dear, my precious baby. It will never feel like there is justice for what she has done and put our family through.”

The case was before Judge Maurice Williams in Westchester County Court and prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Charlotte Gudis of the Special Prosecutions Division.

Yonkers, NY – February 2, 2024 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and the Yonkers Kiwanis Club in collaboration with the City of Yonkers and Yonkers Board of Education will present the 2024 Teacher of the Year Awards to three deserving members of the Yonkers Public Schools’ faculty. Students, parents, teachers, and administrators can begin submitting nominations today through March 1 at www.yonkersny.gov.

 

Established in 1956, the Teacher of the Year Award celebrates Yonkers teachers who further excellence in education. A committee comprised of members of the Yonkers Kiwanis Club and Trustees of the Board of Education selects the honorees.

Three Yonkers Public Schools teachers, representing the elementary, middle, and high school levels will be selected. Students, parents, teachers, and administrators are encouraged to nominate a teacher at www.yonkersny.gov. Eligibility requirements for selection as Teacher of the Year include employment as a teacher in the Yonkers Public Schools for at least five years; demonstration of dedication to the teaching; initiation of new, meaningful programs for either students, teachers, or parents, or being innovative in the use of existing programs, and display significant community involvement.
