 Statement by Senator Kavanagh and Assemblymember Cymbrowitz Regarding Not Advancing the Proposed NYC Housing Authority ‘Trust’ Bill This Legislative Session.
 

Senator Brian Kavanagh and Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, the Chairs, respectively, of the Senate and Assembly Housing Committees, released the following joint statement:

 

“After consultation with public housing residents, the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and other stakeholders on proposed legislation (S6999A/A7805) that would create the New York City Public Housing Preservation Trust — a new public agency intended to enable NYCHA to seek higher levels of federal funding to renovate and manage up to 25,000 apartments — we have decided that further conversation, outreach, and negotiation are necessary before advancing legislation on this topic.

 

“For this reason, we will hold the bill in committee for the remainder of the current legislative session, which ends next week. We thank everyone who provided input and expressed their concerns about the proposal, and we look forward to continuing to discuss how best to meet the needs of public housing residents in the months ahead.”

Muscoot Farm’s Art Shows Return Saturday, June 5.

 

(Katonah, NY) – Visit Muscoot Farm for the animals and stay for the art as the farm’s art shows return every weekend through October, 12 noon to 4 p.m., beginning Saturday, June 5, in the Main House first floor gallery.

 

Each month will showcase the work of a different local artist for visitors to view and purchase. Water color artist and instructor Lori McQueeny, along with additional artists Amy Galinko, Carol Sommers-Rapport, Diane Carmac, Elizabeth Bell and Teri Siegel, who painted together weekly over Zoom during the pandemic, will have the collection, “Watercolor Unmasked: Creativity During Covid,” on display in June.

 

Westchester County Executive George Latimer said, “Muscoot Farm is one of the county’s beloved destinations for families and its art shows were always part of its appeal. The return of the art shows is another exciting reopening the parks department is offering this season.”

 

Westchester County Parks Commissioner Kathy O’Connor said, “We’re thrilled to bring back the Muscoot Farm art shows and additional aspects of all our naturally essential parks this summer. Conveniently located in the Main House, it can easily be your first stop when you arrive or last stop before you leave.”

As she continues on the #RoadToCityCouncil, Lauren stopped by the Let's Talk Relationships Podcast where she opened up about family life and civic leadership. As the mother of twins spoke with hosts, DJ KTE and Lady Misty-both of whom are also twins-Lauren discussed her passion to not just restore the city to its former glory, but also to set it on a path for progress.

“It’s not just about my children but it’s about the future of all families and their children. I want a better city for all of our youth.”

she tells us.

Lauren believes that how we approach family life will indelibly influence how we relate to the larger community.

“Motherhood prepares one to be a nurturer, compassionate, patient and how to be a negotiator with problem-solving skills,” Lauren says. “I possess all of these qualities and am more than prepared for the role as a member of the city council.”

She laments, however, that the community of Mount Vernon requires more commitment to stronger, healthier families as she watches family values depreciate.

“An African proverb states, ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ And that is true. I think a lot of the ills we face as a community are because we have stepped away from that approach and from that way of life. We need to get back to those values and apply them in every area of our lives”

"For example, we have a problem with littering in this city. I've been promoting an anti-litter campaign where one of the highlights includes teaming up with community advocates to clean up their neighborhoods. I encourage residents to take personal responsibility because while the Department of Public Works has a role in maintaining city property and city streets, it is our charge not to litter. Members of DPW are not our maids! We must stop littering and begin to dispose of our trash responsibly if we want to be on the side of progress.”

It is important to note that Lauren is not just speaking as a concerned mother, but as someone who has held positions in the Planning Department and the City Clerk’s Office.

“My experience working as a civil servant for the city makes me uniquely qualified from all the candidates that are running, I would say that I have more experience than almost all of the other candidates vying for the position,” Lauren says.

She believes one of the ways to effectuate reform is to correct legislation that was adopted by the city council for the creation and funding of a Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB). This independent body will be in place for citizens to lodge complaints against police officers without being required to report grievances to the police department.

“It can be intimidating and cause some people not to follow up,”

says Lauren.

Lauren believes police reform should also include enhanced training for police officers to learn better de-escalation tactics. This will be particularly important when interacting with and responding to the homeless and mentally ill populations.

Lauren has the experience, bold ideas, and the skills to help move Mount Vernon in the right direction, but she can’t do it without you - the people. Lauren is a proud graduate of Mount Vernon public schools, Fordham University, and she is currently earning an Executive Master in Urban Planning from the University of Southern California. She is one of the Mount Vernon Democratic City Committee’s endorsed candidates. She has been endorsed by the New York State Working Families Party and by former councilman, James Jubilee.

Statement from New York State Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar on  Gov. Cuomo’s Stonewalling of the Media on $5.1 Million Book Deal. 

  

Brooklyn, NY - “Legislative leaders in Albany can’t allow Gov. Andrew Cuomo to get away with stonewalling the news media in its legal attempts to obtain documents related to Mr. Cuomo’s controversial $5.1 million book contract with Crown Publishing. 

 

“Mr. Cuomo’s book deal stinks to high heaven, and everybody knows it. Let’s count the ways: 

 

1. “The book contract was negotiated at the same time Mr. Cuomo was hiding data on the number of nursing home deaths in New York, a clear possible motive for his malfeasance;
2. “Taxpayer-paid state workers were used to help Mr. Cuomo write the book, at a minimum an ethics violation, and 
3. “The hefty advance on Mr. Cuomo’s book, ‘American Crisis: Leadership Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic,’ was way out of proportion with industry norms. 

 

“Now, Mr. Cuomo is refusing to release documents about the book deal with the ridiculous argument that relinquishing the information could interfere with other inquiries into the deal. He further suggests that his own, handpicked ethics commission — which authorized the sale of the book — has the right to keep its deliberations secret. 

 

“At least 120 Democrat state legislators did the right thing in calling on Gov. Cuomo to resign following multiple sexual harassment allegations levied against him. Those same legislators cannot remain silent over Mr. Cuomo’s latest abuse of power. The public has a right to know what went on with the Cuomo book deal. He is our employee, and his shenanigans must be called out forcefully.”
