2019 Elections: Candidate Profile: Democrat Yonkers City Councilwomen Shanae Williams, Running for Re-Election for Yonkers City Council in the 1st District.
Councilwomen Shanae Williams has done a great job in her time on the Yonkers City Council. She is a tireless worker who is one of the hardest working elected officials in Yonkers, due to her love for our City. She is someone to be admired in how hard she fights and advocates for our City of Yonkers on the Yonkers City Council. She is a champion for our City. She always stands up for Yonkers and always puts her constituents first and not Politics, that is refreshing to have an elected official like City Councilwomen Shanae Williams representing us on the Yonkers City Council in the 1st District.

SCHOOLS
Councilwoman Shanae is a lifelong democrat who is a product of the Yonkers Public Schools. She is fighting for funding to rebuild and renovate our crumbling school buildings. She is fighting to increase funding for our students in the public schools so they could have more sports and after school activities, more guidance counselors and psychologists, more administrators throughout the board of education.
CLEAN NEIGHBORHOOD
Councilwoman Shanae stands for cleaner streets and healthy parks. She has put funding in the budget towards renovating our parks so our kids can have a safe and clean space to play. She also sponsored legislation to address all the vacant lots that are filled with trash so we can hold those responsible, accountable. She sponsored legislation which require landlords that allow dogs in their buildings to provide dog waste disposals to encourage residents to clean up after their dogs.
HOUSING
Councilwoman Shanae is the number one advocate for more affordable housing. She has taken the lead on strengthening the current affordable housing ordinance. She is working on increasing the percentage of affordable housing units from 10% to 18%. As a former commissioner on the municipal housing authority of the city of Yonkers, she has supported and continues to support renovating ALL our public housing in Yonkers including Scholobaum & Cottage gardens.
HOMELESS
She started a homelessness taskforce to bring attention to the issues surround the homeless in Yonkers. She has introduced legislation calling on the County to provide day programs so that the homeless have a place to go and get the services they need including but not limited to mental health services, substance abuse services, help finding employment, and help finding affordable housing. She also introduced legislation urging the County to provide sufficient funding for adequate housing for the homeless.
SAFETY
Councilwoman Shanae Williams is working with the police department to keep our streets safe. She is working on mandating implicit bias training for all city departments starting with the Yonkers Police Department.

Councilwoman Shanae has been working tirelessly to help connect people to job opportunities. From working with local women and minority owned businesses to the labor/trades unions, she has held job fairs, launched seasonal jobs opportunities and promote apprenticeship programs for her residents.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: YONKERS MAYOR MIKE SPANO ANNOUNCES FREE RECYCLING & WASTE PICKUPS FOR CITY RESIDENTS.
YONKERS, NY – April 29, 2019 – Mayor Mike Spano, along with the Department of Public Works, announced free recycling and waste pickups will be available to city residents on Wednesday, May 1 and Saturday, May 4.
“Yonkers continues to lead the way in sustainability efforts and recycling is a big component of that,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “Making recycling and trash disposal as easy as possible for our residents through home pickups is a great way to start spring cleaning and contribute to our ongoing efforts in making Yonkers a greener city.”
This Wednesday, May 1 is “Spring Yard Clean-up Day,” when residents may place their yard waste, twigs and leaves in paper bags curbside for pickup. Residents may also bring organic yard waste to the City’s Organic Recycling Yard located at 610 Nepperhan Avenue, the rest of this week, from Monday – Saturday, between 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM.
In addition, the following home pickups are available this Saturday, May 4 to all Yonkers residents who live in a 1-6 family housing unit:
§ Styrofoam: Residents are encouraged to recycle styrofoam in clear plastic bags.
§ E-waste: Electronics such as computers, printers, toasters or other electronic devices with an electrical cord
§ Old tires without rims – maximum of 4 tires per household
Residents must call the Mayor’s Help Line this week at 914-377-(HELP) 4357 to make an appointment for pickup. Appointments must be made by 12 noon, on Friday, May 3. Residents are also encouraged to bring these items to the City’s Recycling Center located at 735 Saw Mill River Road in Yonkers. This free service will be available on Saturday, May 4, between 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM, to all residents who can provide proof of Yonkers residency.

YONKERS, NY – April 29, 2019 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today swore in Theresa Forgét as the city’s new Deputy Commissioner of Human Resources. Yonkers City Council recently confirmed Forgét’s appointment at its April 23rd meeting.
“Theresa holds impressive personnel and recruiting credentials which will be valuable to our Human Resources team that oversees over 5,000 municipal and Yonkers Public School employees and another 5,000 retirees,” said Mayor Spano. “Her in-depth knowledge and years of experience certainly will be an asset to the department and we look forward to working with her.”
As Deputy Commissioner, Forgét’s responsibilities include developing and communicating the City’s and Board of Education’s training and staff development programs, administering all personnel rules and procedures and administering employee benefit programs.
Prior to joining the City of Yonkers, Forgét served as Senior Director of Human Resources for Montefiore Health System in New York where she managed the division of Human Resources for an employee population of 2,000. Previously, Forgét worked in Talent Recruitment at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and at Onward Healthcare in Connecticut. Forgét holds a Bachelor of Science Political Science from Sacred Heart University and a Masters of Arts in Student Personnel Administration from New York University.
“I look forward to working with Yonkers’ Human Resources staff in continuing to provide exceptional support and services to the employees of our city and schools,” said Theresa Forgét. “I am grateful to Mayor Spano for this opportunity, and I am proud to be of part of the city’s stellar team.”
Forgét fills a deputy commissioner position left vacant in 2018.

Latinos Unidos of Yonkers, a community group made up of people from diverse immigrant countries, working for the advancement of the Hispanic/Latino community, today endorsed Mayor Mike Spano for re-election, noting his success in promoting the City’s Hispanic/Latino community and working for better education, better jobs, and better housing.
“Jobs, education and housing are the most important issues to any immigrant community, and Mayor Spano has made them a priority,” said Alfonso Alvarez “He has a strong record of serving the Hispanic/Latino community, which is why we are endorsing him for another four years.”
Spano has also led the way in diversifying the City’s leadership and workforce. “Thanks to Mayor Spano we have the City’s first Latino Judge, the first Latino Superintendent of Schools and Board of Trustees President, not to mention other Latino Trustees, department heads, a Latina Chair of the Public Library, and increased Latino employment throughout City Government,” said Pedro Alvarez, noting that under Spano the number of applicants for police and fire civil services test has also increased significantly .
Luis Muniz, also noted that Mayor Spano instituted the City’s first pre-apprenticeship program to qualify young men and women for construction jobs. Of the inaugural class, 24 of the 25 participants were men and women of color.
Latinos Unidos of Yonkers also noted that Mayor Spano created the City’s first Hispanic Advisory Committee, created the first affordable housing ordinance, and has long spoken out in favor of immigration reform.
