I continued our summer activities with a tour of Untermeyer Gardens alongside Park Advocate Steve Byrns, a great way to wrap up Parks and Gardens Month.
Beginning August 6, two significant bills, A5435A and A8529 will come into effect. Assembly Bill A5435A mandates that the Department of Health create a directory of doulas for Medicaid reimbursement, and Assembly Bill A8529 promotes the use of doula services, individuals who provide you and your family with emotional, informational, and physical support during pregnancy, birth and the immediate postpartum period, among Medicaid recipients. I’m pleased to support these measures, as they aim to improve access to essential doula services for those in need.
Additionally, starting August 15, a new provision from the state budget will go into effect. This requires high school seniors, or their parents/guardians, to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or submit a waiver form. This change, part of Budget Bill A8806C, is designed to assist students in accessing financial aid and making college more attainable.
Moreover, my Communications Director, Celena Alchamas, took part in the 2024 ALS Ice Bucket Challenge By joining this event, we’re helping to raise awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Geireg Disease and supporting the ALS Association’s important work. It’s a great way for us to contribute to this vital cause.
I again call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza! I urge all involved parties to engage in negotiations for a lasting peace agreement, which includes the release of all hostages and prisoners. Additionally, it is imperative that the international community promptly addresses the hunger and starvation affecting the population in Gaza. From the start of this conflict, nearly 40,000 have died, 80,000 are injured, and 1.5 million Palestinians have been displaced from their home. |
