Yonkers Insider: Prop One: State Senator Shocked That Her Own Ballot Initiative Doesn't Include the Word "Abortion".

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  STATE SENATOR SHOCKED TO LEARN THAT BALLOT ISSUE SHE CHAMPIONED DOESN’T INCLUDE THE WORD ‘ABORTION’.

Wants to Add Abortion Language to Ballot Description After Proposal was Rushed Through Legislature Without It.

New York - July 24…You can’t make this stuff up: State Senator Liz Krueger (D-WFP, Manhattan), who worked to rush a controversial ballot issue through the State Legislature without any hearings, has suddenly realized that her proposal, called the “Equal Rights Amendment” by supporters and the “Parent Replacement Act” by opponents, never included the word “abortion.”

The veteran legislator, with a face full of egg, is now cynically attempting to add the word to the Board of Elections description of the initiative that voters will see on their November ballots, despite the fact that “abortion” is never mentioned in the official ballot proposal language, the nonpartisan Coalition to Protect Kids - NY today revealed. Abortion is at no risk in New York: It was legalized here in 1970 — three years before Roe v. Wade — and the state has the most liberal abortion laws in the nation.

“This dangerously worded initiative was rushed through the Legislature without a single public hearing or consultation with Constitutional scholars, and it shows,” said Coalition to Protect Kids - NY spokeswoman Ayesha Kreutz. “Much of the language in the amendment proposal is vague and ill-defined, but one thing is crystal clear: the word ‘abortion’ is never mentioned in the legislation, so it can’t reasonably be added to the voter description of the initiative, also known as Prop One. Legislation isn’t protean; it’s a written contract, and Senator Krueger and other progressives are now attempting to change that contract after it was signed. That’s obviously wrong.”

Prop One was the brainchild of Ms. Krueger and others who hoped to make abortion an issue in the state this election year, despite there being no threat to abortion laws here. Ms. Krueger’s amendment would, however, threaten several long-held norms in the state, the Coalition charges. As written, the amendment would almost certainly prevent parents from having the right to know if an underage child is gender transitioning in school, and it would almost certainly lead to a Constitutional right for biological males to compete in girls and women’s sports. Language in the amendment could also threaten sensible age laws, such as 55+ retirement communities, and lead to non-citizens voting in New York elections, the Coalition said.

“If Senator Krueger wants an amendment on abortion, she should write one,” Ms. Kreutz continued. “But this one didn’t include it, and, despite her deep embarrassment, Ms. Krueger can’t change that now. The ink on the ballot initiative is already dry.”

The Coalition to Protect Kids-NY is a nonpartisan ballot issue committee registered with the New York State Board of Elections. It is composed of New Yorkers from all walks of life dedicated to defeating the so-called Equal Rights Amendment to the New York State Constitution.
