CITY OF YONKERS FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSTS FIRST URBAN SEARCH AND RESCUE SHOWCASE AT CROSS COUNTY CENTER.
YONKERS, NY – June 12, 2024 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano this week visited the City of Yonkers Fire Department’s first Urban Search and Rescue Showcase at the Cross County Center. The showcase was open to mutual aid counterparts and neighboring departments. Nearly 50 City of Yonkers firefighters participated.
“This is a great way for our fire department to examine and strengthen their capabilities in the event of a major emergency response,” said Mayor Mike Spano. “We have always supported and provided resources for our fire department to have the best equipment and training. This showcase allows them to connect with other mutual aid companies so we can all help each other when called upon.”
Yonkers Firefighters demonstrated sophisticated rescue techniques used during critical car accidents and rope rescue methods used during potential structure collapse. The showcase also included discussions of procedures during hazardous material events and intricate water rescues.
“This was an excellent opportunity to build upon our relationships in the region,” said City of Yonkers Fire Commissioner William Fitzpatrick. “The primary goal of this event was to foster collaboration, demonstrate equipment and capabilities, and discuss strategies for emergency response and we did just that. It’s a win.”
Fitzpatrick was instrumental in the creation of Squad 11 Engine Company along with redefining hazardous material response and improving training for technical rescues.
Participating departments included Hartsdale, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Pelham, White Plains and Arlington along with regional partners from Connecticut (Danbury, Fairfield, and Greenwich). This is the largest regional showcase ever hosted by the Yonkers Fire Department.
Senior Manager, Property Management at Cross County Center Carl Calabro said, “We are happy to provide our space at Cross County Center for this very important community collaboration with Fire Departments throughout the tri-state region. Shopper safety is always our top priority, so when we were approached about using our garage and North Lot for this important showcase, we were thrilled to say yes.”
