COUNCILWOMAN SHANAE WILLIAMS CALLS ON WESTCHESTER COUNTY BOARD OF LEGISLATORS TO ACT ACCORDING TO THE COUNTY CHARTER.
Williams Calls on The Board to Remove Legislator Johnson from Office for Moving Out of The District He Was Elected to Serve.
JUNE 1, 2023 Yonkers, NY – Councilmember Shanae Williams who is the endorsed democratic candidate for County Legislator District 16, calls on the Board of legislators to act immediately according to the county charter.
Legislator Johnson was elected to represent District 16 and a few months into his two-year term, he purchased a home outside the district on June 10, 2022. According to the Journal News report, the tenants living in the condo that Johnson claims is still his primary residence said on record that Johnson “does not live here”.
The county charter states: “Each county legislator shall be an elector of the county and a resident of the district from which he is elected. A county legislator who ceases to be a resident of such district from which he is elected shall forfeit his office and the same shall be deemed vacant.”
Councilwoman Williams states: “The charter is as clear as day and the Board has yet to act knowing the facts of the matter. The Legislator moved out of the district and so that office should be vacant. What is the point of having rules and regulations created by lawmakers, if those same lawmakers won’t abide by them?”
Williams continues, “Several weeks ago when the Board of Legislators failed to act right away after learning that their staffer was involved in a sex sting, targeting a minor, Legislator Johnson played politics to remove Catherine Borgia as Chair of the Board. She was held accountable, while Johnson was never even challenged for his knowledge of employing a predator. Legislator Johnson is now under investigation again, this time by the Inspector General for scamming an affordable housing program in his district and there’s evidence of him moving out of the district he was elected to serve, which is a violation of the county charter, and nothing has been done about it. Who will hold Legislator Johnson accountable for breaking the law?”
“This is sexism at its finest and its unacceptable. The Board of Legislators must remove Johnson from office, and he should return every penny he received from the time he left the district until now. Let’s do the right thing by the taxpayers of this county and stop the corruption!” says Williams.
