Yonkers Insider: Statement from New York State Assermblyman Nader Sayegh 90th District.

Friends,

We now have a State Budget! In Albany, negotiating and advocating, we continue to work together to make sure our community is well represented. I have been working to keep more money in your pockets and invest in the programs and policies that make life better for our families. The new state budget provides the roadmap for how we’ll get there.

The spending plan funds our Yonkers Public Schools providing additional funding. $374 million dollars in State School Aid is a new record and I am proud to support the district where I served as a Teacher, Principal and School Board President.

For New York State to thrive now and in the future, we must invest in the education of our children and young adults, and that is why I voted to increase Pre-K funding for Yonkers Schools to $18 million, and voted to block tuition increases at our State and City Colleges (SUNY CUNY).

Every Yonkers resident deserves to feel safe and to be safe when walking around their neighborhood. In my recent constituent survey, most people checked off that they do feel safe. Still, there were a number of "not always" responses and that is why I voted to rollback the 2019 Bail Reforms. Now Judges will have more discretion to set bail for those arrested for violent crimes, as well as low level offences such as serial shoplifting. The budget also increases funding for anti-gun violence programs I have supported.

The role of State Assemblyman includes protecting the district from bad policies and decisions. I fought successfully to block a proposed State takeover of Local Zoning Rules, which would have allowed apartment buildings to go up in neighborhoods zoned for single-family residences. People of every ethnic and racial back ground have invested in homes in Yonkers single-family neigborhoods, and I strongly opposed any action that would have undermined the value of their property, while impacting their quality of life.
