As we start a new month this week the Assembly is voting on major items for the 2023-2024 State Budget including record State support for public education. A State Capitol Budget of $229 Billion is expected to address necessary funding crucial to all New Yorkers.
Meantime, I am proud to report that our efforts and strong advocacy to put the brakes on the State’s proposed takeover of Local Zoning in Single Family Neighborhoods across Yonkers and New York State have been put to rest. The Governor's Affordable Housing Compact would have negatively impacted on neighborhoods across our City and State.
Last year, I took the lead in the Assembly to stop Legislation to override Local Zoning Laws which would allow for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). The plan was dropped then and again now! As I support the Governor’s initiative to expand Available Affordable Housing, I stand firm to stop any override of Local Zoning Protections. In the wake of the Nashville school mass shooting, school districts across New York were forced into lockdown by false reports of attacks. I have introduced legislation in the Assembly to create a statewide Schools Safety and Security Standard (A.3278).
The legislation directs the Commissioner of Education to consult with the State’s top experts on safety and security, the New York State Police and the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, to establish standards for the security of school buildings and grounds.
As a former Yonkers School Principal and School Board President, I understand the importance of setting standards and enacting plans to meet them. We must leave no stone unturned in safeguarding our schools. |
