I'm pleased to announce construction on the Champlain Hudson Power Express, a 339-mile subterranean transmission line that will bring clean renewable power from Quebec's hydroelectric plants to our area has begun.
The Champlain Hudson Power Express, will deliver up to 1.2 gigawatts of electricity to Downstate New York, enough to power 1 million homes. The Champlain Hudson Power Express is a critical component of our State's ambitious clean energy goals, and upon its completion will guarantee that over 70% of households in New York State receive their energy from renewable clean sources. The project will generate approximately $3.5 billion in economic activity and create 1,400 family-sustaining project labor agreement jobs. This project will also ensure that energy will decrease in price and remain resistant to market surges driven by global upheaval. A win for consumers, a win for our grid's resiliency, and a win for the environment. I'm proud to support this project and others which will facilitate an orderly transition to clean renewables.
The groundbreaking was held in Northern New York with Governor Kathy Hochul, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Officials and Keiwit, NKT, and Hitachi company officials. The transmission line is expected to be completed by 2026.
