Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15.  It is a time to appreciate and celebrate the colorful cultures, rich histories and diversity of the American Latino Community.  

September 15 is set as the starting date because it is the independence anniversary for Latin American countries from El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras.  The independence days of Mexico and Chile fall on September 16 and September 18, respectively.

Yonkers Insider: Yonkers City Councilwoman Corazon Pineda Issac 2nd District: 3rd Precinct Community Council.

 


On Wednesday, September 21, 2022, the 3rd Precinct Community Council held its monthly meeting. There was a good turnout and Kelly Olson-Chiarella, of the Yonkers Office for the Aging, came by and gave a presentation about all the services currently being offered by her office. The 3rd Precinct Community Council meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7:30pm at the Chema Center. I encourage all area residents to attend these monthly meetings. It’s a good way to connect with other community members and the Yonkers Police Department.  The next 3rd Precinct Community Council meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 19, 2022.

City-Wide Clean-Up Scheduled for Saturday, October 22 from 6AM-12PM; To Schedule Bulk Pick-Up call (914) 377-HELP (4357)


YONKERS, NY – September 27, 2022 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano and Yonkers Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas G. Meier today announced that the Department of Public Works (DPW) will conduct a city-wide Fall Clean-Up on Saturday, October 22, from 6:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. The clean-up is aimed at cleaning neglected vacant properties, city streets and community gardens throughout Yonkers.

 

“This fall we are taking direct action to restore the health and vibrancy of our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Spano. “This clean-up is about teamwork and community commitment. I encourage our residents, local businesses and community associations to support our efforts as we continue to improve our city and its quality of life.”


Alongside the scheduled city-wide Fall Clean-Up, sanitation trucks will collect additional bulk items from six-family dwellings or less. To schedule a bulk pick-up, residents are encouraged to call the Mayor’s Help Line at 914-377-HELP (4357).


“The Department of Public Works will deploy its entire workforce to get Yonkers as clean as possible before Winter kicks in,” said DPW Commissioner Meier.

 

To ensure Yonkers remains clean following the clean-up, Mayor Spano also is reminding residents to report any instances of illegal dumping to the City’s anti-dumping hotline by calling 914-377-DUMP. A reward of up to $1,000 is offered for anyone who reports a case of illegal dumping that leads to an arrest and conviction.

 

“If you see something, it pays to say something,” said Mayor Spano. “We must all take part and take pride in keeping our city clean.”

 

Yonkers Department of Public Works:


§  Picks up over 200 million pounds of trash per year with 4.6 million stops each year


§  Maintains over 1,000 miles of road per year


§  Manages the 30 million gallons of water per day that passes through the City system


§  Maintains over 25,000 manholes and cleans and repairs 11,500 catch basins per year


§  Consists of over 370 employees
